NJ Teaching Standard 5-Application of Content

From the time 27:05 to 27:35 in this video, students are applying previous content knowledge to a new activity.  Within the same lesson, students figured out how to read long and short sounds and how to put them together in patterns.  In the last portion of this lesson, students applied their knowledge of long and short sounds to decoding and grouping objects in the song "Witch's Brew" into two catoegories of long and short patterns.

NJ Teaching Standard 8-Instructional Strategies

From the time 10:27 to 11:35 in this video, I use multiple instructional strategies to help students understand the difference between short and long sounds.  This is a preparatory activity for ta and ti-ti.

NJ Teaching Standard 3-Learning Environments

From the time 3:44 to 4:15, I am applying teaching techniques to help students feel more comfortable to learn in the classroom.  I make sure that I know the name of the students that I next call up, and I encourage students to make several guesses even if they make a mistake the first few times.

NJ Teaching Standard 7-Planning for Instruction

From the times 8:47 to 9:45 and 15:23 to 16:45, I am demonstrating how I planned for instruction for this lesson.  In the first clip, I introduce the song and game "All Around the Buttercup".  In the second clip, I am guiding students to discovering the form of the song since students have had the experience of the game while singing the song.

NJ Teaching Standard 4-Content Knowledge

From the time 13:10 to 19:14, I am demonstrating my knowledge of the content of the lesson through my teaching.  I am fully aware of the sequence of this portion of the lesson, and I am also aware of how my students are processing the information.  I am giving clear instruction and simple presentation of the information, and I am able to confidently lead the students as they sing their newly composed melody as a class due to my sight reading and pitch skills.

NJ Teaching Standard 1-Learner Development

From the time 19:11 to 20:12, I am both honoring the multiple learning differences in the class and presenting appropriate challenges for this group of students.  I present several different patterns for them to possibly use in their compositions, but I also encourage them to make up their own melody.

NJ Teaching Standard 6-Assessment

From the time 30:28 to 35:17, I am using multiple ways of assessing the students' knowledge of the content and concepts.  I use a Kodaly body notes system of assessing if students can tell the difference between higher and lower pitches in "Mouse, Mousie".  I also use cards with mice pictures to assess both students' knowledge of pitch and rhythm as they put the cards in the order of the song.

Kindergarten Lesson

NJ Teaching Standard 2-Learning Differences

From the time 12:52 to 13:22 and 15:53 to 20:58, I am using my understanding of individual differences to create an inclusive learning environment and set my students up for success.  In each sequence, I am introducing and practicing with loud and soft.  The first segment uses kinesthetic processes, and the second segment uses visual size relationships.
