Rhythm/coordination Game = T puts four squares out in a row, each symbol or picture has two of each, T secretly assigns a clap or pat on the lap to each picture, T performs pattern, asks st. “Can you figure out my secret pattern?”, T rearranges squares until st. can figure out the code, st. get the chance to arrange squares

1. Can students follow the teacher’s pattern of claps and pats?
2. Can students decode which symbol represents which movement?
3. Can students rearrange the shapes in a new pattern independently?
Engine, Engine = T says poem, asks critical listening questions, st. learn poem through call and response, st. play game, T says poem by clapping and stepping out each syllable of the poem while st. do call and response of what the T does, T replaces words with “short” and “long”, asks st. to decode which part of the poem is the “short/long” pattern that T said instead of poem words

1. Can students say the poem “Engine, Engine” independently?
2. Can students clap and step either the steady beat or the rhythm of the poem when prompted?
3. Are students able to recognize the difference between short and long sounds?
4. Are students able to decode where the teacher’s example of short and long sounds occurs in the poem without the words?
5. Are students able to rearrange the short and long patterns independently?
