Grouping Shapes/Characters = T introduces each character/shape by saying and clapping, st. echo, T guides st. to realize which words have 2 syllables, 3 syllables, etc., characters with same number of syllables are put together in groups, T asks “What if these characters/shapes were all in the same song? How would we know how to organize them?”, T introduces barline and how it is used in music, st. place barlines in between each character

 

Assessments

1. Can students say and clap each character/shape?

2. Can students recognize which words have 2 syllables, 3 syllables, etc.?

3. Do students understand that each group of beats is separated by barlines?

4. Can students use barlines to separate the beats correctly?

5. Can students understand that each separation of beats is a measure?

 

Meter = T asks st. how many beats are within barlines in any examples presented, T introduces meter as the number of beats per barline, st. practice decoding meter in different examples

 

Assessments

1. Can students count and decode how many beats are in each measure?

2. Are students able to decode the meter of the music examples based on the groupings of beats?
